This recipe is taken from The Taste of Home Cookbook.
Ingredients:
4 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
3/4 cup warm water
1 cup warm milk
3/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup honey
2 teaspoons salt
3 eggs
1 teaspoon butter, melted
Mix the flours in a smaller bowl and set aside. Then dissolved the yeast the warm water. Add milk, shortening, honey, salt, and eggs.
Beat in half the flour mixture until smooth.
Stir in the other half.
Knead for 6-8 minutes on a floured surface and then return to a greased bowl. Cover and let rise for an hour, on until doubled.
Then punch the dough down (my favorite part). Then divide the dough in half and form round loaves. Place each in a round baking pan, greased.
Let rise until doubled, or about 35 minutes.
Bake at 375 for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with butter. Allow to cool before serving.
My dad isn't a big fan of wheat bread, but he loved this. He might not have taken so strongly to it if I'd told him it was wheat from the get-go, but hey, what's life without a little deception?
